Qualifications

• General knowledge of the National Park Service mission and of the relationship of the park’s Resource Protection and Public Use Management Program to the NPS mission.
• Performs both day and overnight wilderness, front country, and/or alpine patrols. Checks trail and wilderness campsite conditions; performs a variety of resource management and maintenance projects such as reporting significant resource damage and maintenance problems, assisting with wildlife issues, and damage response.
• Responsible for completion of assigned resources related projects; backcountry/wilderness campsite inventory, analysis and monitoring system, campsite rehabilitation/maintenance, backcountry/wilderness privy relocation and care, hazard tree analysis and mitigation, minor trail work, fish census cards, boundary patrols/projects.
• Possess a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification, equipping me with essential skills in backcountry medical response and emergency care.
• Serves as a member of all-risk operations, search and rescue, and wildland fires.
• Conduct search operations for lost hikers, campers, or climbers in remote and challenging terrains, ensuring swift and coordinated response efforts.
• May assist with rescue training and maintenance of rescue equipment. 

• Performs emergency medical treatment at the Basic First Aid/CPR Level.
• Responsible for educating visitors regarding the requirements for wilderness hiking and camping, and Park regulations. Disseminates information on wilderness and alpine conditions. Inform visitors about park facilities and resources. Provides basic information for the visiting public. Staffs’ visitors contact station, maintains records and performs general visitor services.
• Skilled in the use of maps and compass, backcountry navigation, minimum impact hiking and camping to conduct wilderness patrols for visitor contact assignments.
• Skills to work in group settings and communicating with the public on a regular basis.
• Assist in the daily care, feeding, grooming, and training of llamas used as pack animals for transporting tools and supplies during trail maintenance projects. Monitor the health and well-being of the animals, ensure humane handling, and accompany them on backcountry assignments, often in rugged or remote terrain.
• Evaluate trees for structural defects or diseases that may pose risks to trail users or infrastructure.
• Identify and document active bird nests and other sensitive wildlife habitats to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and minimize ecological impact during trail maintenance and forestry operations.
