Nicholas Gibbs
My journey started out with a joinery apprenticeship in the UK at age 16. After 3 years I completed that and remained with the company Andrew Jaynes LTD for 10 years. The work was high end, low maintenance windows and doors as well as listed period remakes to match in with Georgian and Victorian styles. Working my way up to foreman and capable of doing everything from rough milling, finish machining, assembling, drafting, CNC programming and operating. The company expanded from 6 employees to 30, by which time I relocated to the US.
I joined Traum woodworking located in Colorado Springs in 2019. Following a similar story to before, I worked my way up, turning my hand to everything from redesigning and making luxury safe interiors, any one off radius work, producing cabinets, getting the company set up to produce man doors and carrying that out effectively to a high standard. The company in that 7 years has expanded from 10 employees to 40, with two workshop moves in that time.
After 17 years in the woodworking trade, I feel ready for a new challenge with a motivated, skilled team shooting for excellence, even if that means relocating. I bring a somehow attitude where everything is possible and possess the skills, knowledge and tools to make things happen.
Work History
Door Shop Foreman
4 Years- Supervised shop workflow, assigning tasks and balancing workloads across the shop
- Reviewed blueprints and cut lists to verify build accuracy and project requirements
- Inspected finished pieces for quality, fit, and finish before release to next stage
- Trained existing cabinet makers and apprentices to produce man doors and the joinery skills required
- Produced tagged 20 and 60 minute fire doors
- Implemented required measures to bring the shop up to OSHA standards through a college program
CNC Programmer/Operator
4 Years- Programmed and operated CNC to produce cabinet parts, man doors, any custom pieces
- Organized getting more complex tooling like aggregates etc to carry out advanced machining
- Split off as a department of Traum to make the highest end custom doors, fully machined with hardware for predominantly residential clients
Cabinet Maker/Machinist
7 Years- Interpret drawings, select lumber/veneer, machine and assemble all types of millwork from moldings, cabinets, man doors, countertops, louvers, luxury safe interiors etc
- Work with all kinds of materials from sheets, lumber, veneer, leather, laminate, glass, metal etc
- Produce to the highest standards for the most demanding clientele where only the best is acceptable
- Redesigned and produced Traum Safe interiors, start to finish, for Traums high security luxury safes
CNC Programmer/Operator
2 Years 4 Months- Designed specific tooling for our product
- Programmed every possible set up from the ground up including sliding sash windows, hinged casement windows, front doors, french doors, bifold doors, all with different profile/component/shape/size options. Programmed any custom design required
- Operated CNC almost every day alongside programming and production management. Trained others to operate and maintain the machine
- Quality controlled and made adjustments where required
Production Manager
4 Years 11 Months- Planned, organized and managed operations, including ordering materials and supplies, workflow management and timely production
- Designed and improved product, for functionality and production cost
- Delivered operating plans and growth objectives
- Oversaw all departments including office job preparation, machining, assembly, finishing, glazing
AutoCAD Draftsman
7 Years 11 Months- Design and set out any bespoke jobs. For costing, functionality and manufacture
- Answer any queries from the shop floor through drawings, for example, a radius dimension or angle
- Client or heritage approval
Wood Machinist
9 Years 8 Months- This was a large role for me pre CNC
- Work from cutting lists and drawings to accurately select, cross cut, joint, size, rebate all products to .005" tolerance
- Became proficient with all common woodworking machinery
- Machine any trims, moldings, panels etc
Bench Joiner
9 Years 8 Months- Used various hand tools to finish timber components for assembly
- Marked out and cut joints/cleaned out and fitted joints
- Used hand tools/power tools to position and fit hardware
- Performed most traditional joinery tasks
Education
Diploma And NVQ Level 2+3 - Bench Joinery
- I completed a 3 year apprenticeship funded by Andrew Jaynes LTD related to bench joinery/woodworking
- Per week this involved 4 days of full time work, and one day at college
High School Diploma
- B's and C's in english, maths, science, IT
