Archaeology Technician and NEPA Guest Lecturer for Dr. David M. Hyde

  • I performed the Hurst Hill archaeological site survey as lead technician under the supervision of Dr. David Hyde (WCU): This work included mapping the site parameters using a Total Station Theodolite and transect measurements utilizing compass and cartography techniques.
  • We also collected, analyzed and inventoried all the artifacts found on the site and placed them within provenance context of the overall site.
  • I also led/taught WCU anthropology student crews in archaeological techniques at the site, as well as teaching the identification and analysis of lithic artifacts.

Ecological Restoration Specialist and Project/Crew Lead

  • Conservation work with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) as the Area 16 Ecological Restoration Specialist.
  • This position allowed me an opportunity to practice on the ground conservation management in the holistic sense, in particular applying my specialized expertise in ecological restoration and project management for Gunnison’s Sage Grouse management.
  • My responsibilities in this position included inventory and analysis of treatment sites, creation of restoration project layouts and designs, and implementation and coordination of said projects with an emphasis on proficiency in logistical and operational performance, as well as safety of crews and volunteers.
  • Navigating complex communications scenarios were also a requirement in this position, i.e. human resource duties and conflict resolution.
  • I also collected and used GIS and other data to compose and present finalized program reports.
  • I utilized my NRM expertise in ensuring continuity between projects and applicable laws/regulations, including NEPA, Cultural Resource Management (CRM), the Clean Water Act (CWA) and the Endangered Species Act (ESA), etc.
  • Additionally I collaborated on USFS and BLM EA/EIS development when required.
  • Supervised the implementation of methodologies in project designs, including tandem Zeedyk structural applications, Beaver Dam Analogues (BDAs), as well as armoring and hydro-armoring of swales.
  • We also utilized Plug and Spread, swales, and other mechanical methods to restore hydrological regime in watersheds.
  • I created the crew orientation and safety standards.
  • I managed the CPW crew and their schedules, educated the CWP crew in ecological restoration principles and practices, and mentored several Western Colorado University/CPW interns in a DEI capacity.
  • Under my leadership the CPW crew adapted to challenges and was highly productive.
  • We collaborated with various stakeholders, both public and private, on natural resource management projects ranging from riparian/wetland restoration to wildlife studies, to property management (trail and signage installation and repair) on federal lands and State Wildlife Areas (SWAs), to road and fence decommissioning projects.
